The Kibera Green Street (KGS) project transformed an underutilized wayleave in Kibera, Nairobi, into a multifunctional public space, addressing environmental and economic challenges. Using Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and a participatory design process, the project engaged local groups such as the Kibera Action Group Organization (KAGO) and Riverside Youth Group to co-design stormwater drains, terraced spaces, and community-led businesses, including the KAGO Salon and Riverside Youth Car Wash.

By integrating green infrastructure with economic initiatives, the project mitigated flooding, improved accessibility, and empowered local entrepreneurship. Key challenges included coordinating diverse stakeholders and addressing gaps left by government infrastructure projects. However, the project significantly enhanced community resilience by reducing flood risks, creating revenue-generating opportunities, and fostering social cohesion. By its expected completion in 2024, the KGS project will serve as a model for sustainable urban development in informal settlements.
