KISIPhttps://www.kisip.go.ke/kisip-i aimed to improve living conditions and strengthen the security of tenure in informal settlements across Kenya. The project was supported by the World Bank, Sida, and AFD, in collaboration with the Kenyan government.
Location: Embakasi Kayole, Soweto and KCC Settlements
Year: 2011
How the tactic was applied: KISIP used a community-led approach, emphasizing bottom-up inclusion. Local committees that included youth and women were formed to manage tasks such as decision-making and minute-taking. Ideas originated from the community members, and strategies evolved with the project’s progress.
Challenges/Benefits Noted: While the approach fostered community ownership of the project, it revealed challenges in tenure regularization, especially since the local leaders handled land disputes. The project proponents respected the unique nature of informal settlements but highlighted the balance needed between local knowledge and technical expertise, particularly in matters security of tenure.
